OK, he calls it a one-man play, adapted from his book, but I prefer to call it a road show. Mike Lisagor did a fine job of conveying the life of a buddha as his book does. Playing on the title (Romancing the Stone) of the Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner movie of (20?) years ago, Lisagor reveals the same pathos, humor, drama as the movie. Of course the main difference is the outcome. Romantic as it may seem to escape in the (spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the movie–if that is possible) sailboat being towed down the streets of Manhattan, there is guarantee that the joy will continue. It’s the romance of the buddha that offers absolute happiness–with the conviction that one is charge of his or her own destiny, not dependent on beneficial circumstances of the moment which cannot last. The one man show will likely be an intermittent thing, here and there as Lisagor travels around for his day job. So get the book.
